A Journey That Began in 1991

Supreme Deck Restoration, Inc. was founded in 1991 by Craig Niner, who recognized an emerging need in the deck restoration market. After graduating from Livonia Churchill High School, Craig worked at Mans Lumber in Canton, Michigan, where he gained invaluable experience in the technical aspects of deck refinishing. At the time, only a few companies offered such services, and Craig saw a golden opportunity to fill the gap. His goal was simple: pay for his tuition at Michigan State University and build something sustainable for the future.

In the summer of 1991, Craig rented a pressure washer and set out to restore fewer than 100 decks. Little did he know, this would be the start of a company that would eventually service thousands of decks and become a leader in the industry.

Expanding and Growing: The 1990s

By 1995, Supreme Deck Restoration had grown rapidly, servicing over 200 decks. Craig brought in his childhood friend, Robert Schepis, as an equal partner. Together, they shared a passion for quality work and a determination to avoid the typical corporate path after graduating from Michigan State University in 1996. They focused on growing the business, expanding services, and cultivating loyal customer relationships. The mission: provide the highest quality service to every customer and ensure that they would return and refer others.

By 2000, Supreme Deck was not only refining and restoring decks, but it was also beginning to build new decks, starting with wood options. Clients were increasingly asking for board replacements, and the company responded by offering custom wood decks to meet those needs.

Embracing Innovation: 2000s to 2010s

As the years passed, Supreme Deck saw continued growth. By 2009, the company expanded into full deck construction and began offering composite decking options, like Trex, in response to customer demand. Clients were increasingly looking for low-maintenance alternatives to traditional wood decks, and Supreme Deck was there to provide expert installation.

In 2010, Supreme Deck made a strategic move to open The Stain Depot, an online store dedicated to selling high-quality deck stains. As the market for oil-based deck stains dwindled, due to the closure of many smaller stores, Supreme Deck saw an opportunity to meet the demand for these hard-to-find products. The Stain Depot quickly became a success, and within a few years, it grew into a multi-million-dollar business.

Today: A Local Leader with National Recognition

Today, Supreme Deck Restoration is the largest deck restoration company in Michigan, servicing over 1,500 decks annually. The company has also expanded into custom deck building through Supreme Deck Building. In 2022, Supreme Deck was honored to be included in the Trex Diamond Club, a prestigious recognition for the top 15 Trex builders in the United States.

The Stain Depot has also become one of the top online retailers for quality deck stains, including brands like Sikkens/Proluxe, Penofin, TWP, Olympic, Messmer’s, and Sashco. With over $10 million in sales, The Stain Depot is a leader in its niche market.

Supreme Deck Restoration, Inc., was founded in 1991 by Craig Niner.  Craig started refinishing decks just after graduating From Livonia Churchill High School. While working at Mans Lumber in Canton, Craig saw a new market forming in deck restoration. At the time there was only a few companies that did such work. He had been trained in the technical side from the paint companies for 3 years and saw an opportunity and needed a way to pay for college tuition at Michigan State University. He rented a pressure washer and restored less than a 100 decks that summer.

Summer of 1995

By the summer of 1995, the company grew to servicing well over 200 decks, so Craig enlisted the help of a childhood friend, Robert Schepis who became an equal partner. In the fall of 1996, both Robert and Craig Graduated from Michigan State University. Both were motivated to stay out of “Corporate America” and decided to grow the business. Today, Supreme Deck Restoration is the largest Deck Restoration company in Michigan servicing over 1,500 decks annually. The work is performed by trained employees of Supreme Deck Restoration, none of the work is sub-contracted out. Every 2-3 man crew includes at least 1-2  “experienced” employees; many employees have been with the company for over 20 years and have serviced over well over 10,000 decks. Supreme Deck crew chiefs have serviced more decks than most, if not all of our competing companies have. Both Rob and Craig believe that if their customers are taken care of they will  use them again and refer out their neighbors and friends. 

2000

By the summer of 2000, Supreme Deck grew to service well over 1,000 decks and having more and more customer requested board replacement. More than a third of client were needing a new deck in the next few years. Supreme Deck starting building wood decks that year.  Maintenance was becoming a factor to clients having to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars every other year was getting old.

 

2009

Supreme Deck was growing in deck construction and needed more time for estimates for complete replacement. Cedar wood decks still dominated the quotes, however more and more were asking about Trex composite decking.  That was when we started building composite decks

 

2010

The Stain Depot opened online. Supreme Deck was seasonal and didn’t know what to do with all of the stain that was never used during the season. With all of the mom and pop stores closing top oil based deck stains were extremely hard to find. The box stores did not carry it at all. They decided to sell it online and have grown it to well over 10 million in sales
